The Hispano-Mozarabic Rite consistently though all its changes places the Samaritan Woman on the First Sunday of Lent, the beginning of Lent for that rite, although Ash Wednesday was at one point copied from the Roman Rite. The Blind Man and Lazarus follow on the Second and Third Sundays respectively. This explains why the hymn centers on the Raising of Lazarus.
Christe immense, Dominator sancte,
Custodi
plebem, quam tu redemisti
Sanguine
sacro tuo pretioso;
Ipse salvasti.
Claritas fulget, Dominusque fecit,
In
Bethania ad Lazarum venit,
Quem
suscitavit, et gloriam suam
Manifestavit.
Maria autem domi retenta,
Quem
expectabat; pietas immensa
Illi
occurrit, et annuntiavit
Sororque Martha.
Magister adest. Occurrunt sorores,
Et
lachrymantes, Christum confitentes
Sic
meruerunt, ut viderent fratrem
Suum resurgentem.
Ad monumentum exlamabat Jesus:
Lazare
veni, Dominusque tecum.
Ille
surrexit, et omnis caterva
Ibi convertitur.
In Samaria ut homo sitivit,
Et
mulieri peccata dimisit,
Coecus
enim natus lumen magnum
Vidit in Siloe.
In Samaria fecit confitentes,
In
Bethania Lazarum surgentem,
Surdos
audientes, et mutos loquentes,
Quos visitavit.
Gloria Patri, Trino Sempiterno
Gloria
Christo, Spirituique Sancto:
Praedicet
Trinum pia voce nomen
Omne per aevum.
O Christ the infinite, Holy Ruler, guard the
people, whom you have redeemed and saved by your holy and precious blood. A brilliant
light shone forth, when the Lord acted, when he came to Bethany, to Lazarus,
whom he raised and revealed his glory. Mary remained at home waiting for him;
Martha, her sister, with great love ran to meet him and tell him the
news. The Master is here, the tearful sisters
run to meet him and confess him to be
the Christ, so they were worthy to see their brother risen. Jesus next to the tomb exclaims “Lazarus,
come out, the Lord is with you”, Lazarus was raised and all those crowded
round were converted. In Samaria the Man thirsted and forgave the sins of the
woman; the man born blind saw a great light in Siloam. In Samaria he caused
the people to believe, in Bethany he made Lazarus to be raised, among those
he visited he made the deaf to hear and the mute to speak. Glory to the Father, O
Holy Trinity, glory to Christ and the Holy Spirit, may the Triune Name be
proclaimed in every age. Amen.
