St. Peter Damian on the Pope

St. Peter called St. Gregory VII, the great reforming Pope, "Holy Satan" because the Pope took the hermit out of his cell and made him a Papal legate. 

Papam rite colo, sed te prostratus adoro;

Tu facis hunc dominum, te facit iste deum

I rightly honor the Pope, but before Thee I bow in worship;

Thou didst make him lord, he makes himself god.

Vivere vis Romae clara depromita voce;

Plus domino papae quam damno pareo papae

Wilt thou live in Rome, cry aloud:
The Pope's lord more than the Pope I obey
