From the Exposition by S. Gregory the Great of the Book of the Kings On 1 Kings (1 Sam.) Ch. 1

THERE was a certain man of Ramathaim-zophim, of mount Ephraim. We may say that blessed Mary the ever- Virgin Mother of God is meant by the name of this mountain. Indeed, she was a mountain, and by her sublime calling she transcended the high calling of all other chosen creatures. Was not Mary a lofty mountain, who, that she might attain unto the conception of the Eternal Word, reared the peak of her merits above all the choirs of Angels until she reached the shining, heavenly Sun? Isaiah, prophesying of the pre-eminent dignity of this mountain, said, And it shall come to pass in the last days that the mountain of the Lord's house shall be established in the top of the mountains. Indeed, she was a mountain in the top of the mountains, for she was exalted and shone above all other Saints.
