Three Three Anglo-Saxon Latin Hymns in honor the Blessed Virgin MaryHymns in honor the Blessed Virgin Mary
From
Inge B. Milfull, The Hymns of the Anglo-Saxon Church: these hymns are no found
outside of Anglo-Saxon England. All three are intended for use on the
Assumption or Candlemas, but are sufficiently generic to be used on the
Saturday memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
GABRIHEL,
DEI ARCHANGEIUS,
nostrae salutis nuntius,
intonuit sic Mariam
salutans
sacratissimam:
‘Ave,
Maria inclita,
tu plena dei gratia,
concipies per spiritum
&
generabis filium.'
0
virgo beatissima
supra
celos benedicta,
exora
pro monachorum
devoto
choro supplicum.
Gabriel, the Archangel of God, the herald of our
salvation, greeting the most holy Virgin announced: “Hail, noble Mary, you are filled with God’s grace,
you will conceive and give birth to a Son”. O most blessed Virgin, you who are
blessed beyond the heavens, pray for the choir of humble monks, who are devoted
to you.
Maria, celi regina
sanctitate gloriosa,
audi preces famulorum
& deprecare dominum.
Qui
toturn mundum condidit,
in te formatus extitit,
quem totus mundus non capit
In
tuo ventre iacuit.
Hunc
nobis nasci profuit;
a morte nos eripuit,
pro nobis ipse mortuus
&
nos per ipsum vivimus.
O
Mary, Queen of heaven, glorious in your holiness, hear the prayers of your
servants and intercede to the Lord. He,
who created the whole world, was formed and entered into you, he, whom the whole world could not contain, was
laid in your womb. It was profitable to us that he came forth from you; he
delivered us from death, when he died for us, and we live through him.
MARIA,
VIRGO VIRGINUM
exaudi vota servorum,
iugi prece nos conserva
ac
te colentes adiuva.
Audemus
proni rogare:
Audire
nostros dignare
In
tuo melos honore
ac
pro nobis intercede.
Iuncta
choris angelicis,
nos salva patrociniis,
ut perpetim cum civibus
gaudeamus
celestibus.
Gloria
tibi, domine

O Mary, Virgin of virgins, hear the prayers of
your servants, keep us by your eternal prayer, aid those who celebrate you.
Prostrate before you we dare to ask: “vouchsafe to hear our songs in your honor
and intercede for us”. Joined to the choirs of angels, save us by your
patronage, that we may perpetually rejoice with the citizens of heaven.
The
usual Marian doxology.
