Mozarabic Hymns: The Fourth and Fifth Sundays of Lent & Ferias & Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of Holy Week: Lauds

Mozarabic Hymns: The Fourth and Fifth Sundays of Lent & Ferias & Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of Holy Week: Lauds

Noctis tempus jam praeterit,
Jam gallus canit, vivis
Gallo canente spes reddit;
Aegris salus refunditur.

Somno gravati surgite,
Cordis reatum paudite,
Jesuque laudem dicite,
Qui nos redemit sanguine.

Non ut fallax discipulus,
Qui pacem ferens osculo;
Et dolum tenens pectore,
Turbis Magistrum tradidit.

Jesus captus ab impiis:
Disperguntur discipuli:
Locutus est ut Dominus
Nocte ferens scandalum.

Jesus suis discipulis,
Dum crucem suam praedicat,
Negari sese praemonet;
Petrus facturus abnegat.

Petrus fervens spiritu
Sequitur in praetorio;
Sed agnitus discipulus,
Negavit Christum Dominum.

Petrus jurabat omnibus:
Se non novisse hominem:
Vox namque galli resonat,
Et Petrus culpam meminit.

Jesus, dum Petrum respicit,
Fidem Petri dum suscipit,
Petrusque, flendo, recipit,
Quod ante paulo amiserat.

Et nos precamur, Domine,
Fidem Petri recipere,
Fidemque Apostolicam,
Flentes pro nostro crimine.

Gallo canente venimus;
Laudes Deo persolvimus:
Confessionis propriae
Dantes ei veram fidem.

Abscede princeps doemonum
Cum noxiis phantasmatum:
Jam nos piavit veritas;
Jam probra tersit charitas.

Hinc te, Deus, deposcimus,
Ut pervagantes doemonas
Signo salutis destruas;
Nos a pavore libera.

Hac noctis hora praescius
David futurae gloriae
Deo preces multiplicat,
In matutinis excubans.

Hac nos oportet surgere
Illo vigore corporis,
Illoque voto spiritus,
Quo expiemur sordibus.

Exurge, nobiscum Deus,
Laudes tuorum suscipe,
Lustrando corda lubrica
Lucis novellae gratia.

Deo Patri sit gloria,
Ejusque soli Filio,
Cum Spiritu Paraclito
Regnans per omne saeculum.
   Amen.

Now the night time has passed, now the cock sings aloud, and the cock’s song brings  hope and pours out health again upon the sick. Rise from heavy sleep, reveal guilt of heart, sing praise to Jesus, who redeemed us by his blood.  Be not like that false disciple, who giving the kiss of peace but holding deceit in his heart handed over the Master to the crowds. Jesus is captured by the impious, the disciples are scattered, just as the Lord had said, so scandal is brought in under the dark of night.  Jesus predicts his cross to his disciples, he warns that one of them will deny him , Peter denies that it will be him.  Peter with a fervent spirit follows him to the praetorium, but recognized as a disciple, he denies Christ the Lord. Peter swears before all that he does not know the man, the voice of the cock resounds and Peter knows his sin. When Jesus looks at Peter, he sees Peter’s faith, and Peter weeping receives what just before he had lost.  And we pray to  you, O Lord, that we may  receive the faith of Peter and the Apostolic faith, weeping for our sins. We come at cockcrow, offering God our praise, giving to him our confession of the true faith. Be gone, o prince of demons, with your evil fantasies, now truth has made us holy, now charity has wiped away our vices. Therefore, we beseech you, O God, that you destroy with the sign of salvation the wandering demons; set us free from fear of them. At this hour of the night, David, prophet of the glory which was to come, multiply your prayers to God, watching for the morning.  At this hour it is necessary for us to rise with strength of body and with the vow of our spirit, by which we may atone for our uncleanness.  Rise with us, O God, accept the praises of your own, shine upon our deceiving hearts with the grace of new light. To God the Father be glory, and to his only Son, with the Spirit Comforter, ruling through all ages. Amen.
